Our Minds Crave Depth
Focus On One Thing At A Time
For all valuable activities in life, it is not possible to do more than one at the same time. In fact, it is not even possible to do multiple things at once.
The reason is that truly valuable activities require our complete attention.
If you are doing multiple things at once, you are not doing something truly valuable.
It is not possible to do valuable activities all of the time. But, when you do have time, it is important that you make sure that you do one thing at a time.
When you try to do multiple things at once, or do not give our full attention to the thing you are trying to do, you sell yourself short.
The same lessons that apply to our personal lives also apply to our professional lives and careers. The most important ability in the modern world is the ability to focus on one thing for long enough that you are able to do something valuable. Some parts of our economy have simply adapted to mass distraction and lowered the expectations for productivity. This trend makes the ability to focus on one thing more valuable than ever. If you can find a way to master this, you can easily distinguish yourself.
Everything that is truly valuable in life requires our complete focus or presence. If you want to practice an instrument, you can’t truly practice without putting aside all other distractions, and focusing solely on the instrument.
Our minds crave depth.
Perpetual distraction. Perpetual shallowness.
