In this week’s guide, I am going to try something a little bit different and rely heavily on Simon Critchley’s account of Chapter V which presents a compelling interpretation of how all of the moving parts presented there fit together into a sustained and unified argument.
In studying and teaching Heidegger, I have found that there are different ways to explain what he’s on about. Some of these click for certain readers, and others don’t. I hope that this one clicks for everyone.
According to Critchley, Chapter V of Division One provides a “conceptual infrastructure or undergirding to everything” in Being and Time. It is a long chapter, with a lot of moving parts.
The goal is to prepare us for the definition of the being of Dasein as “care” in chapter VI. The definition of Dasein as care is the primary aim of Division One.
The good news? Critchley says that “everything — even in Heidegger and even in Being and Time — can be said clearly. Anyone who says otherwise is bullshitting you”.
