Overview

Chapter Five marks a turning point in many ways, and provides the final ascent before we reach Heidegger’s summit in the form of Care.

In the preceding chapters Heidegger has analyzed being-in-the-world largely through our practical dealings with equipment — hammering, using tools, the workshop of ready-to-hand things. That might leave the impression that being-in-the-world just is dealing with equipment. But practical concern is only one mode of being-in-the-world.

What being-in essentially is, Heidegger now argues, is what he calls disclosedness.

The chapter’s task is to spell out the structure of the “there” (das Da) — the open, lit-up region in which entities can show up at all. Dasein is its “there.” Heidegger unpacks this “there” into a small set of equally basic (what he calls equiprimordial) structures. Here is a general overview of the chapter (up to paragraph 34):
